Internacional 2-1 Palmeiras
In
the penultimate match of the 2005 Brazilian Championship
Internacional needed a win to stay in touch with Corinthians
in the title race on a very hot day in Porto Alegre
in front of a packed Beira Rio stadium the result ended
in a 2-1 victory for Inter with goals from Jorge Wagner
and Colombian striker Wason Renteria.
In
the 24th minute the referee Evandro Roman gave Internacional
a free kick which should have gone the other way, the
resulting free kick was crossed into the penalty area
where Paraguayan Carlos Gamarra was adjudged to have
conceded another foul resulting in a penalty for Internacional,
set piece specialist Jorge Wagner stepped up and slotted
the ball in the corner of the net to put Inter 1-0 to
the good. Emerson Leao the Palmeiras coach was sent
off in the 29th minute after several minutes of remonstrations
with referee Roman about the previous two decisions
that the referee had made.
Seven
minutes later former Sao Paulo, Middlesbrough and Glasgow
Celtic player Juninho Paulista levelled the score with
great free kick from outside the penalty area, this
resulted in Inter goalkeeper Clemer diving into the
goal post and having to leave the field of play and
be replaced by Andre in goal.
Shortly
after the second half a long ball forward was knocked
down by Fernandao for Rafael Sobis to run onto and have
a good short on the break producing a great save from
Palmeiras keeper Marcos. As the second half went on
Marcos made a number of good saves.
Internacional's
introduction of Marcio Mossoro and Wason Renteria midway
through the second half provided some much needed injection
of pace to Inter's attack and Palmeiras also produced
one good chance from a Sergio Gionio header from a Marcinho
cross, but Internacional wrapped things up with a Wason
Renteria left foot shot in the 87th minute sending the
fans wild with delight.
